Maria has over 12 years of experience working in the education sector in various capacities. She has worked in education policy research and evaluation as well as taught and tutored children and adults with special needs. As a graduate school intern, she provided case management and therapy to Baltimore City youth in pursuit of their GED and/or employment. The daughter of Nigerian immigrants and the first in her family to graduate from college, Maria is passionate about college access and career readiness. She particularly enjoys building relationships with young people as they work toward achieving their educational, employment and personal goals in spite of the obstacles they may be facing in life.
Most recently, as a counselor with Northern Virginia Community College’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program, Maria provided admissions and enrollment, financial aid, and academic advising assistance to students from underserved populations and also taught a College Success Skills course. Maria is particularly excited to join the ACES programs as she is a product of the Montgomery County Public School system herself. She earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana and a master’s degree in social work with a clinical concentration and specialization in children and families from the University of Maryland.
